"Heh," He Tingting sneered. By now, she realized this so-called Immortal was nothing more than an Old Woman skilled at reading people's minds.
"Have you gone mad? You've offended the Immortal and you can still laugh? I knew you were up to no good. Back in He Family Village, I never saw you being particularly filial to me. Now you come to my house every day; I'm afraid you just want to Jinx me to death sooner." Grandmother He had already felt some distaste for He Tingting after hearing the Immortal say she wasn't suited to stay by her side. Hearing her strange laughter now, she felt even more certain that the reason her health hadn't improved for so long was because of He Tingting.
"Huh?"
Hearing Grandmother He's words, He Tingting understood what it meant for someone to turn their back on you. They were clearly the ones who had asked her to come, but now she was the one with ill intentions.
"What are you 'huh'-ing about? You Jinx! I truly regret having a granddaughter like you. You're simply a punishment from the Heavens!" From the sofa, Grandmother He kicked at He Tingting. The force she used didn't make her look like someone who had injured her body at all.
"You weren't originally..."
He Tingting wanted to say, "You aren't my biological grandmother anyway."
However, before she could finish, the Old Woman beside her cut her off. "A practitioner does not speak falsely. Yet, you, a little girl, claim I am a charlatan without any proof, ruining my reputation. If I don't show you a trick or two, you won't know how powerful I am."
"Are you also calling me an 'Old Woman' without any proof?"
Since they were already trading insults, He Tingting was not one to back down.
"Humph, you slip of a girl. I'll let you gain some experience in a moment and see my cultivation." The Old Woman did not answer He Tingting directly but continued speaking. She noticed that although Grandmother He still trusted her verbally, the look of adoration in her eyes had clearly diminished.
"Immortal, the girl is young and ignorant; you don't need to lower yourself to her level. We call her a demoness only because she has always kept to herself since she was a child and doesn't interact much with people." Grandmother He didn't want things to escalate. After all, the house she was currently living in was bought by her Third Daughter-in-law's parental home. She was alone in the house right now; if anything happened, how would she explain it to her Third Daughter-in-law?
"Don't be afraid. With me here, even if she is a demoness, she won't be able to harm you in the slightest." The Old Woman looked at He Tingting with contempt and said, "Since you don't believe in my cultivation, I will show you my ability to communicate with the Underworld."
"The Immortal can deal with the Underworld?"
Elderly people are particularly afraid of death, feeling as though every day of their remaining life is spent in anxious anticipation of the end. Grandmother He was no exception; she both believed in the existence of the Underworld and feared its reality.
"Naturally. It's a small matter," the Old Woman said proudly, her chin tilted up.
"Then I shall trouble the Immortal," Grandmother He said respectfully.
"Little girl, just watch closely," the Old Woman said with a sinister smile, then turned to Grandmother He. "When I tell you to help me light the fire later, you light it."
"Alright," Grandmother He nodded like a loyal believer.
"Do you have anything you want to give to your deceased Old Man?"
The Old Woman stood up with a solemn expression and asked Grandmother He.
"This gold ring was the betrothal gift his family gave when we married. Help me give it to him. Tell him that our children and grandchildren are all doing very well now, and ask him to protect us, to keep my life peaceful, and to let me live a few more years." Grandmother He reluctantly took the ring off her left hand and handed it to the Immortal. Compared to the gold ring, Grandmother He wanted to live a few more years.
"Fine, I will certainly deliver it." After the Old Woman finished speaking, she found a large aluminum bowl in He Laosans Family home, took a notebook from a nearby table, tore out a page, and folded the paper into a rectangular shape that was hollow at both ends but solid on the sides.
She placed one hollow end of the rectangle into the aluminum bowl with the other hollow end facing up. Pointing at it, she said to the two of them, "This is the small box to the Underworld. I'll put this ring into this paper box. As soon as your grandmother lights the fire, your husband will receive it."
"Mhm," Grandmother He felt it was a sacred moment and nodded seriously.
He Tingting stared silently as the Old Woman took a piece of beige yarn from her pocket. She held one end in her hand and had Grandmother He tie the gold ring to the other end. Throughout the process, the Old Woman's hand never touched the gold ring once.
"Alright, once it's tied securely, you can light the fire." The Old Woman placed the yarn with the gold ring into the folded box and directed Grandmother He to light the ring inside the aluminum bowl.
"Ah, the ring is gone?"
After a flash of fire, the yarn snapped back, but the end where the gold ring had been tied was now empty.
Grandmother He sifted through the paper ash with her hands, but there wasn't a trace of the ring.
"Your husband has accepted the ring. He said you suffered when you married him, and now that he has power in the Netherworld, he can protect you so you live another twenty or thirty years." The Old Woman took a long breath before speaking to Grandmother He, her weak appearance making it look as though she had just finished a taxing ritual.
"Thank you, Immortal! Thank you, Immortal!" Hearing that she could live for another twenty or thirty years, Grandmother He's cloudy eyes grew misty, and the pain of losing the gold ring vanished.
"Well, little brat, do you believe in my abilities now?"
Seeing He Tingting's silence, the Old Woman assumed she was frightened by her cultivation and spoke with a face full of pride.
"Why haven't you apologized to the Immortal yet? I really don't know how your parents raised you. You just spout nonsense all day and don't even know when you've offended someone." Grandmother He slapped the back of He Tingting's head hard, forcing her to apologize to the Old Woman.
However, looking at the beige yarn, He Tingting just smiled faintly and whispered into the Old Woman's ear, "Is the rubber band in your sleeve useful? The gold ring is in your cuff right now, isn't it?"
"What did you say? How do you know?"
Hearing He Tingting's words, the Old Woman looked at her in terror, as if she were looking at a monster.
"Because I am a demoness, and I know everything," He Tingting replied with a sinister smile. It seemed her guess was correct; this Old Woman couldn't communicate with the Underworld at all. The so-called communication was nothing more than a magic trick. The reason the ring disappeared just now was because the Old Woman had two pieces of yarn in her hand. The yarn tied to the gold ring had been pulled back into her sleeve by the elasticity of the rubber band as soon as Grandmother He lit the fire. At the same time, the Old Woman dropped the other piece of yarn in her hand, pretending the gold ring had been delivered to the Underworld.
None of this required any cultivation. As long as one's hand speed was fast enough, even He Tingting could perform it.
